The Kenyan trade culture has always been based on physical exchange of money between buyers and sellers. Pesapal, a mobile payment platform moves Kenyans to have an eCommerce experience. This system enables individuals to trade on the internet using Mpesa, Zap and credit cards
Agosto Liko, the founder of Pesapal illustrated how this application works and its benefits to the Kenyan eCommerce ecosystem. This took place at Mobile Monday, a mobile application forum held at the ihub Nairobi.
90% of Kenyans cannot buy and sell online; they have no credit cards and are unbanked. Pesapal services to the ordinary Kenyans, can be compared to services being offered by Paypal and Google Checkout to business people. It is a mobile phone form of digital payment where common people easily understand.
When a business entity wants to sell its products or services via a website, they are required to sign up for an account by Pesapal. Mobile phone payments will be then set up using their own Mpesa or Zap accounts. The business can then transact and receive payments.
The Pesapal application has since then enabled 13 million Kenyans to transact in business. It has gained trust, at no point has anyone experienced money loss during transactions. Money transferred either sits with the bank or the person doing the transaction.
With this kind of reliability, the company which started two years ago experienced its 100th transaction in the first year. At the moment, Pesapal has a solution for schools. Students will be able to pay their fees using Pesapal mobile application. In relation to this, the company is behind Safaricom "Lipa Karo na Mpesa" solution.
Ihub has also integrated Pesapal mobile payment system, red members will be able to use it to settle their membership fee and the same to buying pastries & cappuccino from the Pete's coffee bar.
