Facebook booms in search

Facebook saw a 48% jump in searches on its social networking site between February and March, one of the few big changes in the market over that period, according to ComScore's latest figures.

Facebook, which says it has more than 400 million active users, continues to power ahead, with increased acceptance in business as well as among consumers despite assorted privacy and security concerns.

ComScore, a digital measurement company, shows in its latest research that Facebook had 647 million searches in March, giving it a 2.7% share of the overall U.S. search market. That puts Facebook just behind eBay and just ahead of AOL on the list.

In its study of 15.4 billion core searches, ComScore found Google Sites on top with 65.1% of the market, down 0.4% from February. It was followed by Yahoo (which reversed a slide), Microsoft, Ask and AOL, all of which gained minimally.

Microsoft's Bing showed life, with a 7% increase in search queries between February and March. Microsoft upgraded Bing in March, adding new mapping and other features.
