AccessKenya to offer residential Internet service

AccessKenya has invested US$3.5 million toward a residential Internet service that will connect most locations in Nairobi and Mombasa.

The investment will ensure customers access to Internet services from their offices and homes at a dedicated capacity, said Jonathan Somen, AccessKenya managing director.

"The project will be the largest WiMax network in Kenya, with an initial deployment of 35 base stations in Nairobi and Mombasa," he said. "It will be supplied by Alvarion, one of the world's leading providers of WiMax, which has provided services to Namibia Telecom, Telkom SA and MTN Uganda."

With its new offering, AccessKenya fulfills its pledge to move into the strategic home broadband market, a goal the company set before floating shares at the Nairobi Stock Exchange last year.
